Principles Of The Method
altImprovement of talented people comes from their awareness of themselves in action. Their talent arises from their freedom to choose their modes of action. New modes of action are available to those who have discovered themselves, or who have had the good luck to meet a teacher who helped them to learn to learn.” Moshe Feldenkrais, D. Sc.  Elusive Obvious (p.96).

Think Choices:
Unless we have at least three different ways to act or behave that are comfortable and familiar to us, we don’t really have a choice in our actions. The Feldenkrais Method® supports helping you expand your abilities to include at least three choices for any given act.
"The movement is used only for learning.  You learn how to do the same thing you know how to do in three different ways."
Moshe Feldenkrais, D..Sc. NYC Worskhop 1980.

Think Awareness:
Knowing what we are doing is the only way to help us get what we want. We can’t make a change in a behavior or action unless we know what and how we are doing what we are doing. People highly skilled in any field has this “meta” knowing. Thus the title Awareness Through Movement.®

Think Learning through Sensing:
Learning is discerning differences. In order to develop the ability to improve a function, you need to learn to sense subtle differences. In order to heighten your ability to sense, The Feldenkrais Method® removes you from the action and out of gravity so you can feel your full weight safely supported by a chair or table, quieting your neuromuscular system.

Think Rest:
Resting after an experience or thought helps to process the experience.  It helps to assimilate new ideas into our everyday actions.

Think Skeletally:

The Feldenkrais Method® takes you out of the action, out of gravity's force, where habitual patterns are maintained. The intention is to return your neuromuscular system to a neutral place, quiet your learned patterns, so you can experience yourself moving through your skeleton. This helps create new possibilities for ways of acting.

Think Strategically:
Limitations are viewed as faulty ‘learned’ strategies. Most habits learned can be unlearned with awareness. The Method supports re-awakening curiosity so  inquiry and problem solving once more become interesting.  The goal is to have the confidence that you can create new strategies for any situation.

Think Integration – Think WHOLE:
The limitation is only one part of us connected to a whole. We want to stay focused and optimize your ability to move in areas that are working and see an intergrated whole image of action.
Keep your eye on what's working.

Think going in the direction of ease:
Good movement wants to be light and easy.  Therefore, as you learn to listen and discern differences in quality, you want to go with what's easy first, listen and learn, and then see how you could go in the direction of difficulty-- with ease.  Problem solve for new paths, new possibilities.

Think Function:

A sensory experience of how you could function optimally can support development of functional strength and the belief that you can improve.

Think Self- Image – Sense of Self – Body Maps:
A Self Image/Sense of Self is developed through experience of our actions in our world. Body Maps are formed through repeated early actions and yet changable with different experiences.

“We're starting to see changes in research that are showing that we do have very plastic brains - meaning that neuronal connections between different cells can sometimes change and we can have new pathways that are wired based on experience. So, there's an interesting kind of feedback loop where the brain creates mind and then the mind can exert power on the brain and physically change the structure of the brain. “ Professor Santa Maria on Larry King Live, September 17, 2010
